Off Pump Coronary Surgery – Revolutionising Cardiac Care
Off Pump Coronary artery bypass grafting, commonly referred to as OPCAB, represents a significant advancement in cardiac surgical techniques. Unlike traditional coronary artery bypass grafting (traditionally called ‘CABG’), OPCAB involves performing the coronary bypass operation without stopping the heart and lungs or utilising the cardio-pulmonary bypass machine. This approach allows for precise surgical intervention while minimising the potential complications associated with traditional methods, avoiding the risk of using the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, and reducing the amount of blood-thinning drugs used during the procedure and the consequent risk of bleeding.
International data showed the complexity of the procedure requires a set of skills different from those required for traditional arrested heart coronary surgery, for which you should only explore this procedure with very senior off-pump surgeons.
Mr Casula has performed over 3000 of these procedures with outstanding long-term results since the first case he performed in 1998.
Off Pump and Robotic MIDCAB
Through small incisions and using specialised instruments, specialist-trained consultant surgeons can access the heart with greater precision and dexterity, facilitating the performance of off-pump coronary surgery with enhanced accuracy and reduced operative morbidity.
Mr Casula is at the forefront of these surgical innovations and would clinically assess you in person and advise you about your suitability to undergo the less invasive option, aimed at a single bypass, or a hybrid approach in combination with a percutaneous stent coronary procedure, also known as PCI.
